On Wednesday morning I managed to visit 5 churches in walking distance of my hotel. The pictures below below may not be in the right order as far as which inside goes with which Church but you will be able to get some feel for the places and what happens inside. A few observations_ they are very old, they are very small, they are cherished and well used, active, and they are used in a very different way. The exteriors are varied but the insides are similar in shape and all painted right up into the Coppola and then their are lots of icons with small tables and candles in front of them.
People coming into the church would go from Icon to icon and make the sign of the cross many times and then kiss the icon.
When you enter there is a lady sitting at a table by the door handing out paper and selling candles and sometimes other things. The paper is for writing down a prayer for someone and in most of the churches you then put the prayer in one of the boxes with some money. In a few I went to people were lined up to give their prayer to a priest and receive a blessing. In those cases the people would kneel and put their heads under the priests stole while he held onto their papers and gave a blessing out loud. People who bought candles were often putting them in small cupboards outside.
One more thing, when you are in a taxi and you pass a church the driver will make the sign of the cross 3 times and many cabs have crosses or holy cards in their cabs. So they really cherish their religion.
